Hernandez Takes Gold, Continues Rise in Gymnastics
16-year-old wins 2013 U.S. Junior National Championships
Hernandez is the first gymnast to win the junior all-around and floor titles since Shawn Johnson in 2007
Laurie Hernandez is one of the rising stars in the junior ranks of gymnastics, and she proved it once again this weekend by winning the all-around and floor titles at the 2013 U.S. Junior National Championships. Hernandez, 16, is the first gymnast to win both titles since Shawn Johnson in 2007.
Hernandez's all-around score of 117.650 was more than two points ahead of the second-place finisher, Gabby Douglas. Hernandez also won the floor exercise with a score of 14.750.
Hernandez's success at the Junior National Championships is a continuation of her strong performances this year. She won the junior all-around title at the 2013 City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy, and she helped the U.S. team win the gold medal at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships.
Hernandez is now one of the favorites to make the U.S. team for the 2016 Olympics. She will be competing against some of the best gymnasts in the world, but she has already shown that she has the talent and determination to succeed at the highest level.
